This is a little cartoon of what I looked like around age 7. I hated shoes and loved snap guns. And my mom dressed me in really frilly clothes. Also, I wanted to grow my hair out so long that it touched the floor.

Aftershock

So! Remember the earthquakes in Japan? I know you all do. This summer (we're looking at July or August) a comic anthology entitled "Aftershock" will be digitally released by Topshelf. I am a contributor, so I'd like to take the time to tell you all to buy it! Proceeds go towards relief for the earthquakes, which people still need (it's only been a couple of months).

Magical

So the magical girl, along with a bunch of other lovely artwork, will be going on auction Sunday, April 17th (tentatively). It will be an ebay non-profit auction, with each artist deciding their particular percentage toward relief funds for Japan. The magical girl here will be 100 percent to charity, with free shipping! So I've been invited to participate in an auction of artwork to benefit the victims of the recent earthquakes in Japan. The only guideline for the piece was what comes to mind when I think of Japan. Being a long time anime fan, of course that was the first thing that came to mind... And since it's the season for cherry blossoms, I decided on a cherry blossom themed magical girl (and her fat Japanese bobtail familiar). I've been watching vintage anime lately, so the magical girl has some 60s/70s inspiration.

Ah, the unexpected hiatus. It is a mysterious and wide-spread beast. I recently moved back to Baltimore, and luckily I have the perfect cure: some Dr. Sketchy's life drawing sketches. And it was one of the few times a male model was available, so I finally got some practice on the male form. The here are some samplings, I believe these are, in order: 10 minutes, 2 minutes, and 5 minutes with the opposite hand.

Moar Character Designs

Nothing much to post today, so have some more character designs from my "Maiz" comic-in-progress. All the animals and animal-people will be local to Guatemala, so here we have a crocodile, a sea turtle, and a jaguar. Jaguars are actually very austere animals in Mayan culture, which I want to reflect in the comic. But for now there's still a lot of design work to be done.

I'm busy working on what is currently my most ambitious photoshop project yet (and it is long overdue), so here are some more sketches in the meantime, all having to do with my current comic in the works.

I considered this sketch for a postcard, actually, but ended up going with a different illustration.

Here are some more character designs. Above is Marcus, the faithful dog of the group. He was a stray before he met Maiz, and so is the precocious type. He's also a music lover. Below is a secondary character who will appear in the first story arc, though I haven't thought up a name for her. Her village worships a giant macaw with sapphire teeth, who I will probably be talking about much more later on.

Thought I'd do that thing where I compare the sketch version to the finished version of some artwork... So here it is with a commission I did a few months ago.

The request was for a watercolor painting, and this was the sketch with some quick PS color thrown on...

And here's how it turned out! MAGIC. This ladybug and her pet aphid are now presumably hanging on the wall of a baby's room. Sweet.

Alright, I'll admit it. I have a huge thing for birch (or aspen) forests and artistic representations thereof. Throw in some skinny, white-barked trees and I am totally there. So when I wanted to test out some new hot press wc paper, I decided to draw some birch trees. Aw yeah. That's what I like.

Maiz

So, my computer died quite a while ago, and while it's not fixed it IS mysteriously up and running right now. I thought I had lost all the files for my website, so this is tremendous news, seeing as I had the chance to back it all up onto my flash drive.

In the past few months I started writing a new comic, and drawing up a lot of character designs for it (I'm just now getting into environment designs and straight-up script writing and such). I won't say too much about it, except it's an adventure comic heavily inspired by Mayan mythology and Guatemala.

So here are some designs I've been working on for the two main characters... I thought it would be interesting to show the progress I made from earlier designs to what I have now.

This is the main character, who I'll call Maiz for now-- since according to Mayan mythology people were formed out of corn. I may or may not change it. Maiz is the inspiration for the whole story, since I wanted to do an adventure with a chubby female lead. I feel like there's practically nothing out there featuring an overweight female character, and the few things I have seen are frankly insulting. But I won't get into my rage right now. Here, have some more Maiz:

I've gotten into the habit of sometimes sketching with ink, and I really like the results... Although it is sometimes disconcerting to not be able to erase anything. But they're just sketches anyway.

Here's Maiz's faithful sidekick, who I'm calling the Blue Monkey for now (again, subject to change) after the Mayan astrological sign. As you can probably tell, the comic will be filled with anthropomorphic animals. I'll stop here for now, but expect to see more work related to this project in the future.

New Website

So I'm working on a new website layout, and I'm nearly finished. And I have a brand new front page graphic, too.

New York and Company

Get ready for a real life finished illustration to be posted on here in the near future. I was inspired by New York and Company's new clothes to do a fashion/lifestyle illustration (since I can't actually afford them). There are some subtly nautical themed things in anticipation for the warmer months, so I decided to use them:

In the next few days I'll be refining this, then I'll do the final illustration in ink and brush and colors in photoshop.

It's 2010

So it's 2010! I hope everyone had a great New Year's. I'll be turning 23 in just a few short days (on the 7th to be precise), and I'm very excited, as this means sauerbraten for dinner. My resolution for this new year: move out to an apartment of any sort by March 1st, regardless of financial means. Let's see if I can do it!

This was a gift for a group of my BFFs-- we call ourselves the Juicers, which is extremely geeky and a long story. The illustration is by me, and then my juicy friend Cristina (the one on the bottom right, with the edamame) screen printed the design onto some t-shirts. The final product looked like this:

At least, this is what it looks like in my dimly lit home. The "Stay Juicy" phrase was chosen because of the oft used "Stay Golden" phrase used in relation to the Golden Girls. That's also partly why we chose golden t-shirts.

Well, that's it for my supreme dorkiness... For now.

'Twas the night before Christmas

Merry Christmas Eve! I'm Italian (in case you missed the "zio" at the end of my name), so Christmas Eve is a big deal in my family-- as much so as Christmas day is. We all get together and eat seafood, and then exchange gifts! This year I made chocolate peppermint cookies for everyone. This is also the first year I made my own cards:

I was stumped for the longest time on what to do, and then one day I watched the Rankin Bass classic "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," and I decided to draw a little tribute to the movie as my card. It's always been one of my favorites, along with "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus." Anyway, here's wishing everyone a happy holiday!

Hello again. I have returned with some sketches and some news. Sketches first:

I've been sketching Briana quite a bit lately, but there's a good reason: she'll be showing up next chapter and I didn't have as much of a handle on her as I would have liked. Sketching her has remedied that.

And now enjoy the gang's winter looks! These probably won't be seen for another couple of chapters, but since it's actually winter in real life and I was feeling festive, I drew them. Also, Michio is gigantic for some reason.

Now for the news.

First off, I've been working on Bad Grammar: Chapter 2, but I hit a few snags (such as writers' block and getting two new jobs to distract me). I recently sat down and forced myself to choose a direction for the story to go in, so hopefully I'll have some material to show in another couple of weeks. Also in regards to Bad Grammar, I've been thinking of turning it into a webcomic. The more I think about it, the more I think that webcomics may just be the outlet for me.

Now, on a note completely unrelated to Bad Grammar: I've started another new project, sketches for which you will soon be seeing here. It is a line of greeting cards for awkward situations, which will be linoleum cut and handmade, then presented for sale (most likely via a site such as etsy). I'll also be working on a gift for some friends of mine, but don't expect to see that until after the holidays.

So, I decided that it was too troublesome to have my sketches on an entirely different blog, even with the link... So they're officially going up here instead. Hooray! Also, I did a "Where the Wild Things Are" piece, seeing as it's all the rage now.

I did this with watercolor pencils, since I couldn't find my Koi watercolors... I hadn't used watercolor pencils in a couple of years, so that was fun. I also used those Ph Martin's watercolors, gotta love those super saturated colors. And the lines are with india ink, of course. I just wanted to do a fun fall piece-- and who doesn't love jumping in a pile of leaves?

Jess and Lizzie Preview

That's right! Jess and Lizzie will be starring in a new comic entitled "Hey, Jess?" which will be printed with "Ummm" in a mini-book and sold at SPX. Here's a peek at their new look:

I decided to keep the color scheme for their clothing the same, but to give Jess and Lizzie slightly different hair colors and skin tones, just to differentiate them a bit more.

And here's a quick color study of Jess' room. Again, I decided to repeat the colors from the first comic.

And just a look at what Jess and Lizzie will look like in the room. I mainly did this to help me visualize the color scheme of the individual panels and decide where to place them for their discussion.

The new comic will be between 3 and 5 pages (I'm still working out the details) and will cover another sensitive issue in puberty: breast growth. After this one, I think I'll either move on to body hair or go more in-depth with the menstrual cycle. Eventually, I look forward to having a "your body and you" type of comic book put together. Anyway, that's all for now.

News: Small Press Expo

Well, I have some exciting news for everyone!

I will be an exhibitor at this year's Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD. The Expo is September 26th and 27th, and you can buy admission for the weekend or for a single day if you like.

In addition to touting some completely new comics, which you will be able to see the inklings of up here as they reach a finished state, I will also be selling printed books of Bad Grammar: Chapter 1. This in particular is exciting news for me.

So, if you're in the area, please stop on by to see me, and of course all the tons of wonderfully talented people who will also be selling their craft. Or, if you're not, buy a plane ticket now. I know I'll certainly be breaking the bank, with all the comics I'll be buying!

Time flies

It truly does! I can't believe summer's almost over already. Well, in any case, I just thought I'd post the final sketch for the yard sale poster, the final of which will be printed at both 8.5x11 and 11x17. It's times like this I really appreciate photoshop. You can see the final product at my main blog if you like.

And to follow I just thought I'd do another "hey look at the different stages of my work" thing. Just to see what a sketch looks like compared to an ink drawing:

As you can see, this is a fairly tight sketch for me. And also, the subject matter is undeniably strange, which tends to happen when I'm left to my own devices. And the final result:

That is one "lucky dog" if I do say so myself. There isn't much of a difference, except for the line weight and such. And, of course, I sometimes change lines around because I can't necessarily see everything in the sketch even with a light box. But it all turns out okay in the end. In any case, I'm glad I got some practice in. Well, that's all for today!

Sorry it's been so long... I've been updating with some sketches on Speed of Flight, though. That's the thing about having too many blogs, I guess.

As you can see, I'm having a yard sale (though not at my own abode). If anyone lives in the area, drop on by for some juicy deals! In any case, a friend of mine and I are helming the poster aspect, and these are the two top sketches for it. While I like the idea of a citrus fruit font, having the whole poster written that way will sacrifice too much readability, so I'll be doing some more sketching of course. Just thought I'd post something up here to show I'm not dead!

Speed of Flight

It's for world-building in-progress. I proposed the idea of making a comic together to Kathryn, and she agreed. However, we had no idea what our collaboration would be about. Hence, this blog. She suggested we simply start drawing, and develop the world and plot line as we drew characters and environments. Since we currently live about 400 miles apart, the quickest way to show each other ideas and progress is through a blog that you can enjoy as well!

Some character designs

Some character designs I've been working on for a comic idea I've been batting around in my head for a while-- it's about people who work in a fast food burger place. These are just a few of the staff members. I like to design characters by starting with the head/face, since that's the main area people focus on to differentiate each other. Then I move downward from there. Sorry for the bright pink, by the way. I decided to buy a hot pink felt-tip pen and quickly became enamored of it. It's almost out of ink, actually.

Target Girls

Another theoretical ad! If you guessed that they're supposed to be for Target, you were correct. These are each acrylic paintings, and my original idea was to create web banners with an "international" theme, though I think these could work for actual real-life banners as well, maybe in store. Or maybe posters with unusual dimensions. I wanted the symbols in the background to be representative of each girl's respective country, but also reflect a target in some way. If nothing else, I think the red/white color theme gets the point across.

This is an image I whipped up for my digital portfolio, to get printed on the CD. I thought it would be fun to show the process, but it is in all actuality pretty boring. I did a very loose pencil sketch, then inked it with a brush and india ink, then into photoshop she goes. I decided to put Ruby from Bad Grammar on there because... Well, let's not invent the wheel. (Get it? Because the CD image is wheel shaped?)

I think I'm going to try to teach myself how to do that photoshop painting thingermajigger. I did this sketch a while ago and when I stumbled across it again I figured this would be a fun one to practice on. Little known fact: I drew this one the first time I heard "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga. Once I get started with the photoshop painting I'll post up the progress and most likely horrific failure. Hey, no one gets it right on the first try.

Stargirl for Art4Hope

So I recently did this watercolor and ink painting for Art4Hope, which is a charity auction and series of exhibitions. All the proceeds go toward the children's wing of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Right now the exhibition is showing at the Johns Hopkins University campus, and on May 3rd it'll move to the MICA campus.

The results of the auction will be announced on May 9th, at 7:30pm. I'll keep my fingers crossed that she earns a whole bunch for the chillins.

Here we have Jess and Lizzie, who are here to teach you about the dreaded "Curse." But in a somewhat tasteful fashion-- at least that's what I would like to believe. I've decided that I'm going to need a lot more practice painting comic pages before I try to do it on a deadline again (it took me a long time), but once I get faster at it I'll be doing a lot more acrylic comics. In the meantime, the further adventures of Jess and Lizzie will most likely be in photoshop. And yes, they will have further adventures. Peace out.

Cacique Lingerie

I decided to do a series of theoretical advertisements, just to see if I could (concept-wise). This is the first of them, and acrylic painting which I decided to base on Lane Bryant's Cacique line of lingerie. Some of the underwear is from the website, some of it I made up. I like how this turned out, and maybe I'll see if I can convince one of my graphic designer friends to put some text on it, just to see how it looks... Since I'm hopelessly inexperienced with that kind of thing. In the meantime, I'll be working on some more theoretical ads.

Bad Grammar Development Sketches

You may have guessed by now, but my entire life is consumed by this comic. So, here are some concept sketches I did quite a while ago of my main character, Michio, and one supporting character whose design refuses to cooperate. Over time the equal-armed crosses have become more and more important... Eventually I will become so consumed with my own ideas that my walls and clothes will look like that. Oh well.

Thump

This is "Thump," a comic about the trials and tribulations of roommates sharing a bunk bed. Everyone who reads this says I don't understand men, but how do they know that these people aren't gay or related or something? They're not, but I never tell anyone that when I show them the comic. Maybe I just believe that somewhere out there, a gentleman exists.

Anyway, enjoy this comic, even though I did it before I got good at hand lettering.

Hansel and Gretel

I had this idea for a series of comics about a spider who was in love with a dumb dog... But this is the only comic that ever came of it. It's "Hansel and Gretel" because Gretel was my childhood dog, who just died of old age last October. If you have a dog, hug it right now, and never let go.

So this is a painting I did for a friend's birthday a long long time ago, but I still like it. This is her dog, Luigi, except that he's much smaller in real life. And he really does have a cherry eye, or whatever that's called.

Wave

Somehow, this was a draft in my blog for a couple of months and I never published it, because I thought I had. I apologize for that! Anyway, this was an illustration of a fortune cookie fortune, which informed me, "Depend on the steadiness and predictability of life to support you." I was so enraged by it that I devoured the cookie in one bite and illustrated it very sarcastically. Obviously I have anger management problems that should be addressed. Still, it made for a good acrylic painting.

Shenanigans

This was to illustrate the root of the word "Shenanigan." It was first used during the Gold Rush to refer to trickery or deceit of some sort. For this illustration I painted paper with acrylics, then scanned the paint and collaged in photoshop. The line work is pen and ink.

This is just something I did for myself. These two are a father and son from my comic-in-development, Bad Grammar. "Yosh" is Japanese for something like "Yeah!" or "Alright!" I just drew this with a felt-tip pen and colored it in photoshop.

The Wino Squid

The Wino Squid is a creation of mine that appears in my assignments every now and then. Here he is illustrating that less is more (in gouache) and then finally becoming real. His longer tentacles were sewn with a sewing machine, the rest was done by hand. His wine of the day is a nice dry Prosecco.

These are some patterns made out of the letters "p" and "g." I drew the letters in ink and then scanned them and did the rest in photoshop.

Fruit Alphabet

Here we have an alphabet made out of fruits. I like to call it the "fralphabet." Originally each letter was painted on an individual postcard with gouache.

This is a diptych illustration Flannery O'Connor's short story "Good Country People." It's about a Bible salesman who seduces a one-legged woman, then steals her prosthetic. It was done with cut paper and colored with photoshop.

Just some reference sheets for the main characters of an original storyline of mine, "Zodiac." The simplest way I can think of explaining it is: aliens based on animals, social unrest, interplanetary repo-men saving the galaxy.
